This is a chapter by chapter, section by section, Free Grace response to John MacArthur's The Gospel According to Jesus. Wilkin shows that MacArthur takes verses out of context in order to argue that works are necessary for salvation. Instead of providing assurance, MacArthur's gospel leads to doubt and despair.
A Gospel of Doubt The Legacy of John MacArthur The Gospel According to Jesus edition by Robert N Wilkin Religion Spirituality eBooks
5 stars because I like the idea of the book as a classic free gracer, but only 2 stars because I think his face value presentation of the gospel is just as wrong as Lordship Salavtion. He misses the point of Romans and overemphasises his understanding of the simplicity of John's gospel. I've attached the page where he messes up on Romans. Salvation is Romans 1:16 is referring to salvation from hell, not temporal deliverance. It's clear in the context of the verse. One must understand he is a sinner and under God's wrath, be convicted of his sin, and then believe in Jesus and Jesus' payment for sin to be declared righteous.Product details

A Gospel of Doubt The Legacy of John MacArthur The Gospel According to Jesus edition by Robert N Wilkin Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Wilkin seeks to take apart MacArthur's' book, The Gospel According to Jesus (TGATJ), chapter-by-chapter and nearly paragraph-by-paragraph. Be forewarned that as an ardent proponent of what he calls "Free Grace" soteriology, Wilkin's critique is very much one-sided and everything is passed through the lens of his free grace viewpoint. While MacArthur is known for overstating his case in TGATJ (so much so it required a second edition with more balanced editing), Wilkin's views and soteriology are so extreme that you simply trade off one man's overstatement for another man's even greater extremes. The Free Grace soterilogy that Wilkin promotes is a minority view of a fracturing movement that does not hold up to biblical and historical evaluation. This book has the same characteristics that hold for all Free Grace teachers it is pedantic and filled with sophistry (reasoning that sounds correct but is actually false). Be discerning! The soteriology of leading Free Grace advocates is becoming so extreme that even those sympathetic to its basic interpretation are writing against the extremes views of teachers like WIlkin - see for example Should Christians Fear Outer Darkness? and The Gospel of the Christ A Biblical Response to the Crossless Gospel Regarding the Contents of Saving Faith.
Outstanding response to John Macarthur. Wilkin lovingly points out the flaws in lordship salvation teaching advocated by MacArthur in light of Scripture. Highly recommended!
Great book that counters MacArthur point by point, not simply in broad fashion. Points (Chapters) can be read or studied separately for use in bible studies, etc.
The results of Calvinism on John MacArthur's life. Information taken from John's book, sermons etc.....What a tragedy to follow a 26 year old like Calvin and his unbiblical thinking.
Although I'm not in agreement with every conclusion he makes, i do believe his basis which of course is the gospel "Grace through faith without works". This book is a must read to those desperately clinging to good works, obedience or anything else for salvation except "Christ alone". For those of us that preach "Free Grace" it is refreshing. To those who believe "perceived behaviourism" is a must for salvation, this book should be helpful to leave behind "dead works" and to have security in Christ. 4 stars because it was great. Minus one star because of personal disagreements with some conclusions (but none of those conclusions changes the believers standing in Christ).
Unlike Macarthurs books which have basically gone far into the dark....
This book shows why many Calvinists have no assurance of eternal life.
I find this book so helpful and I appreciate Wilkens' straightforward style of writing. I don't agree with everything in this book, but overall I find the book refreshing and biblically accurate.
To those of you who believe in Lordship Salvation, my questions is this In order to have assurance of your salvation, how "good" do you have to be? How high do you set the bar? Because no matter how high you place the bar, unless it matches the perfection of Christ, your bar is too low. So how can you have any assurance of salvation if you believe in Lordship salvation? Many christians who believe in Lordship Salvation have doubts about the authenticity of their faith because no matter how many good things they might do, they still fall short of God's perfect standard.
It's interesting that many christians write negative comments about people who believe in free grace. Kind of strange - what's the other option, "non-free" grace? Does that make any sense?
Several years ago, two young mormon missionaries came to my door and we had a discussion about christianity. These guys were really nice and respectful - and they had just come from across the street where my neighbors slammed the door in their face. I respectfully told these men that I had two primary issues/disagreements with Mormon theology Their concept of God and their concept of salvation. After we talked about salvation and requirements for entrance into heaven, one of these gentlemen said "Well, God has done his 99%, but we still have to do out 1%." While most Lordship Salvation proponents will say that God has done 100% of the work, these same people will front load or back load the gospel with works and other requirement that are contrary to the concept of God's grace. This leaves many proponents of Lordship salvation believing that we have to do our 1% or 2% or 0.001% to know that we are right with God.
I'm thankful that God's grace is free for the taking and that I can now honor him as Lord and Savior, without worrying about whether I am a Christian or not every time I stumble. I take seriously the call to holiness, but I think God wants me to serve and love him, not out of fear, but because I love him and desire to honor him from my heart.
5 stars because I like the idea of the book as a classic free gracer, but only 2 stars because I think his face value presentation of the gospel is just as wrong as Lordship Salavtion.
