It's two decades since Chris Stewart moved to his farm on the wrong side of a river in southern Spain and his daughter Chlöe is preparing to leave for university. We find Chris, a local literary celebrity, using his fame to help his old sheep-shearing partner find work on a raucous road trip; cooking a TV lunch for visiting British chef, Rick Stein; and, most movingly, visiting famine-stricken Niger for Oxfam.

Don't read this one first. Read the other three starting with Driving Over Lemons. Then, if you need another Chris Stewart "fix" you can read this book when it's cheaper.I'm guessing that these stories about his life in Spain are the ones that didn't seem interesting enough to be included in the other books. The other books each covered a particular period of time. This book jumps all over the place--which is fine, except I found it confusing. I often asked myself which book should this story have appeared in--first? second? third?
I found the story about giving a talk to a book club in another town memorable. The book club members were very disappointed
that he didn't bring his wife. It turned-out (supposedly) that she was the one they were really interested in seeing. Huh? I couldn't have told anyone her name until I opened this book and saw it in print again. And I never felt sorry for her that she was married to him as the ladies seemed to be.
Even though this book is a disappointment; I am glad he wrote it, but am sad he seems to be running out of "true" stories. I guess that happens to all of us eventually.

Last Days of the Bus Club (Audible Audio Edition) Chris Stewart Whole Story Audiobooks Books Reviews
A great finale of four fantastic novels....a fine storyteller of a simple life made special, exciting, funny and fulfilling! Love Chris Stewarts life and writing! Now reading his 5th one Three always to Capsize a Boat. He is so self deprecating!!
I adore Chris Stewart. I read and re-read his books constantly. He makes light of his problems and the rest is just pure hilarity. His books are interesting and fun reads, and his occasional foray into the nostalgia of his youth only adds to the journey he takes the reader on though his books. I hope his writing "gig" continues for a very long time.
Just love Chris' books. I have read them all and feel like part of the family. This one is no different to the others, humorous at times, always uplifting and a real insight into Spanish living. We travelled to Barcelona (from New Zealand) last year and can't wait to go back next year to explore the small villages and experience some of what I read about. If you need to drift away from your day to day lives, read his series from the beginning....
Driving over lemons is one of my all time favourite books. The subsequent offerings of Chris' life in the Alpejurras I also enjoyed despite the story getting repetitive. Not sure why he bothered with this one? Maybe to fulfill a publishing contract. I could stomach it halfway through the book and no further. One gets the impression Chris is scraping the bottom for story ideas. The snippets seem contrived and stilted, not his usual flowing and highly entertaining style. I only read it halfway to avoid tainting my fondness of Driving over Lemons forever.
Who did not love Driving over Lemons? This is the 4th in the series and does not disappoint. Full of interesting anecdotes and great fun due to the author's wry observations on his fellow man. I am now going to re-read all his previous memoirs as I am reminded of the large cast of characters we grew so fond of in his other books. Well written super book! Thank you for the very entertaining read.
This in book number four in the Driving over Lemons-trilogy (hmmm...). The former Genesis-drummer Chris Stewart continues to report from his life as a foreigner trying to be as Spanish as neccessary living on a mountaion farm with the small family, sheeps and dogs in Andalucía. This time through a lot of different short stories, some of them extremely funny, indeed. At one point he should make a speech in a Spoanish school class about the benefits of going to a mixed school (girls and boys in the same room), compared to his youth when he went to a boys only-school. Due to language misunderstandings the whole thing ended up with Stewart saying he was bisexual. Some of the short stories may miss the same «punchline», but once again Chris Stewart has given us an interesting insight on how life for «extrangeros» can be in Spain, particularily in the souih where most of the locals are really friendly and social.
I have read all Chris's books and really enjoy them all and thoroughly recommend them - it is great to have an update on his life in Spain with Last Days of the Bus Club - this is again a laugh out loud book and because some of the chapters are like self-contained stories I could encourage my husband (who tends to only read thrillers and war history books) to read a chapter (eg Cures for Serpents) and he really enjoyed the bits of the book he read too. In Last Days of the Bus Club Chris also writes about meeting Rick Stein - and I've seen the Rick Stein programme in which Chris and Ana featured. Get this book - it's a great read and you'll be laughing out loud to his anecdotes and turn of phrase too!!
